Monday Musings: Simple Greens

Tria Giovan Photography
Don't worry! This isn't a post about juicing :) (Although, for the record, I finally got my Hurom, and it rocks!) Lately, I feel like every time I open a magazine or check my inbox, I'm running across some sort of article about interior air pollution.
Christopher Peacock's Kitchen
Especially since little Will has been born, I've been thinking a lot more about how clean the air in my house is. We've used green cleaners for years, and, after much adieu and a lot of complaining by painters (and my husband!), have had the formerly painted-shut windows in my house opened. But, now, I'm trying to take it a step further and incorporate more plants into the house to clean the air.

Braulio Casas Architects
Here's the tricky part: House plants aren't always beautiful.
Simply Seductive
Fortunately, it seems like these people have a handle on how to incorporate a little more green into their homes as an organic, lovely part of the decor, not an afterthought.
House of Windsor
In case you're interested, here's a list of plants that NASA says are great at cleaning the air inside our homes: English ivy, spider plant, golden pothos, peace lily, Chinese evergreen, bamboo or reed palm, snake plant, heartleaf philodendron, selloum philodendron, elephant ear philodendron, red-edged dracaena, cornstalk dracaena, Janet Craig dracaena, Warneck dracaena, weeping fig. As a person with the opposite of a green thumb, I have no idea what most of these are. So, now to find the pretty ones...
Christoper Stephens Interiors
The good news, though, is that basically anything with chlorophyll is going to make an impact. These awesome vases are making an impact of a whole different kind... I think they'd make even a beauty-challenged plant look good.

This tree in the kitchen is seriously cool.
Home Designing
This bamboo is crisp and modern looking. Love it.
Ashley Goforth Design
A plant looks much better when it's potted in something pretty. I thought the more formal rooms in our house were going to be the most challenging to green up, but maybe I was wrong! (Yup. I said, "green up." You like that?)

decorpad
Thanks to these gorgeous photos, I feel like I'm full of ideas. Now it's off to the nursery! Hope you all have a fabulous week!

Love this post! I love the tree in the kitchen and the white and green contrast in all the photos you chose. You really have a great eye :)

You know what...you're right. I had not thought about this, but it is really important to help clean the air in our homes. I am going to add plants, too! Thank you!

I didn't know it was certain plants that clean the air but good news I have half of the varieties listed above. I get the air vents cleaned every year they are always dusty. And we use nothing but natural cleaners. I'm going to have too start looking more at the trees outside to see what I can bring inside. Love this post for its natural beauty!

Great post... I love plants inside! It makes such a difference to the room! But yes, not all of them are pretty, and not all of them are what I like to call 'kill proof'! I use lots of ferns potted in urns around the house. They aren't on your list, so I don't know how effective they are with air pollution, but they are gorgeous and SO easy to keep alive! Key for me! Enjoyed your post... good luck shopping! x

I so agree with you on the above.
The second to last image is my favourite. I adore all the pretty rooms. What colour and decor!

I am not too big into greenery of plants in my house. But maybe because I really stink at it!

I've managed to keep a few larger house plants alive for several years in our house and this post reminds me why I've made the effort! Janell

Yes! I've been craving green. These photos are beautiful. My favorite indoor plant is English ivy, especially as topiary, but I sometimes have trouble keeping it free of spider mites.

Have fun with your search for green!

Good morning friends,

Yes - green up! I wish it could be me! I have no green thumb what so ever - only people + animals and white orchids survive at my house !

I am still a HUGE fan of that ourside garden table I posted about a zillion years ago. Perhaps something for your home? (I think it is picture 3).

GREAT post! I have a little 11 month old guy at home, and it's amazing how differently you see the world once they're in it. Also, my hubby wants that juicer bad, but I'm a cheap, terrible wife and he is still without a juicer... :(

Such a beautiful post! I love plants in the home.
I love english ivy and palms. I also love figs but usually buy the high quality artificial because all I can do is kill a fig.
Green can be added by plants when another form of green would not work.
Have a happy Monday, Beth and Kristy.

I think there is a fine line between getting indoor plants right and getting them wrong - so I am a little nervous in this area. You have provided some great inspiration here with your consistently good taste. I'll just have to copy one of these ideas then I'll know I'm ok! x Sharon

It is good to keep a living plant in the house.. I have a few...and I try to get my kids to remember to water them when I might forget. I love when they bloom.

Great inspiration! I've been looking for some ideas as we're sorely missing some green in our place.

And I love the gourds centerpiece in the first photo. Wouldn't have thought of it myself but it makes for such an interesting statement!

I have never wanted indoor plants before, but by the end of your post I was convinced I needed one! Off to google weeping figs...

Food for thought! Interesting topic....something to think about and I think one of the big keys as you said is finding interesting containers to "beautify" those plants that are lets just say....less attractive than others. Good information!

Love them all - would be so much easier for me if I didn't kill everything!

I love plants in a room! It definitely makes an impact! My favorites are fiddle leaf figs and succulents (for small spaces). Gorgeous post! X

Be still my heart! I love plants, and love your post! It is great that you focused on the health benefits first; the aesthetics naturally follow. A couple of years ago I bought Jayme Barretts book "Feng Shui Your Life" and it is brilliant. Plants not only clean our air, but circulate positive energy. After reading her book I removed 3 sansevieria's(aka.mother-in-laws tongue/snake plant) ! Funny I know...but I will take all the pointers I can get even if it is from a plant;)

After reading your post and seeing the beautiful images. I am going to add some plants around my home.

Love it that they improve the air quality. Bonus!

What a great idea to do a post on the impact of plants on indoor air quality! Some of the plant containers are so pretty, perhaps they would make a nice home for a plant that may not be as attractive? I try to use "green" cleaning products where possible, however I've been doing indoor painting - not good. This is an extensive list! I need to head back over to the nursery :)

Enjoying your kind and thoughtful comments. Thank you for stopping by!

This is both a beautiful and practical post. There is nothing like infusing a touch of nature in your decor. That is why green is considered a neutral, it's the most neutral color in nature!

I was so busy yesterday I missed your post! Love the very last image from Decorpad. Such elegance in the simple composition of the picture and the elements in the shot.

Sally and I are in a continual tug of war over plants in the house. I love them. She's indifferent. My solution has been to tuck them in here and there in unobtrusive corners. My favorite is a small moss terrarium I made last fall.

Cheers,
John
