Things We Love: Freestanding Columns

Boxwood Terrace
I have to admit that, when Mom suggested the idea of freestanding columns for "things we love," I was a little hesitant. All my mind could conjure was a picture I saw one time of a room that was trying to capture the feeling of the Parthenon. Needless to say, it wasn't in line with our taste. After seeing these beautiful photos, though, she totally changed my mind! We hope you agree!

Design Traveller
We love the shabby, aged look of this column, and the plant on top is great. What a perfect way to add height to a table.

Little Blue Deer
This column is such a perfect complement to the feel of the room and the fit looks like it was made for the space!

McAlpine, Booth and Ferrier
So unique, so lovely, and such a great, artistic departure from the painting that would typically appear at the end of a hallway like this.

Slettvoll
What a fabulous way to frame a space. We want this whole room!

vintage home
These moss balls are so cool, and the columns are such a unique place to display them. We love the pop of green!
Halfway through the week... Hope yours is going great!

Your blog makes me think about things I'd never thought about before!! I see the point of shorter columns for displaying a sculpture or similar, although, personally, I would probably fear it being knocked, so it would have to be nailed down for me to be comfortable with it! :)

Hello,

I don't think I've noticed freestanding column before in decor... I like the second photo a lot. Inspiring.

love this and so topical for me right now-am working on a home with a structural beam smack in the middle of the living room and we are either going to make it a round or square column--am saving these images to show to my client. xxB

I have got to admit that I was unconvinced until I saw the columns in the last pic with the moss balls on top - they are awesome! I think adding something to the top makes it look less unfinished and random?

Love how the images displayed columns in a unique way. We have some old cement ones in our garden. Hum, you gave me an idea...I might have a place for them inside!

We've had to work around issues in several houses that ended up needing a column of some sort and it always ends up adding just the right detail! Loved this post!

When placed perfectly, columns can add a little drama or frame parts of a room - love John Showers Design and Slettvol! I've considered placing a column in my living room - lots of ideas here!

Wow! I never would have considered using free-standing columns in my decor, but I love them in the photos you've selected.

I like the staggered look of those in the second to last image and how the different heights create some asymmetry.

Free standing columns are one of those wonderful arrows in you quiver to use when you want to frame a view or an area of a room or give a room lift.

Sally and I had a similar problem as Hampton Hostess is dealing with a number of years ago in a 20 x 40 room overlooking a patio. There was a boxed in structural beam crossing the room at 2/3 of the length of the room. We used square pilasters on the walls and floated two round Corinthian style columns about 9" off the walls to visually support the boxed in beam and to define two different areas of the room. They became the spring point for a gorgeous neoclassical design for the room.

Cheers,
John

Hi! Thank you so much for stopping by yesterday. I'm thrilled to have found you, too! I live near Kansas City, and we went to a huge flea market there this past weekend and I couldn't believe how many columns that were for sale there, dirt cheap! Love em.

You know, I never gave much though to free-standing columns - I had the same idea vision of the Parthenon in my mind! But after seeing all these rooms with columns, I realize that they're actually very sculptural and essentially pieces of art. I have whole new appreciation for columns now - thanks! :-)

These are wonderful examples. Sometimes a column is just the right architectural element to add for height and interest.
