I have to admit that, when Mom suggested the idea of freestanding columns for "things we love," I was a little hesitant. All my mind could conjure was a picture I saw one time of a room that was trying to capture the feeling of the Parthenon. Needless to say, it wasn't in line with our taste. After seeing these beautiful photos, though, she totally changed my mind! We hope you agree!

We love the shabby, aged look of this column, and the plant on top is great. What a perfect way to add height to a table.

This column is such a perfect complement to the feel of the room and the fit looks like it was made for the space!

So unique, so lovely, and such a great, artistic departure from the painting that would typically appear at the end of a hallway like this.

What a fabulous way to frame a space. We want this whole room!

I love your blog! Those pictures are sooooooo magic <3
I am your follower now - follow back if you want:)
Your blog makes me think about things I'd never thought about before!! I see the point of shorter columns for displaying a sculpture or similar, although, personally, I would probably fear it being knocked, so it would have to be nailed down for me to be comfortable with it! :)
Well, I have a guess I know how you would vote on my question today! :) Beautiful inspiration photos!
Hello,
I don't think I've noticed freestanding column before in decor... I like the second photo a lot. Inspiring.
Fabulous examples - not always easy to get it right!!
love this and so topical for me right now-am working on a home with a structural beam smack in the middle of the living room and we are either going to make it a round or square column--am saving these images to show to my client. xxB
you always manage to display some of the best images of decor and its total treat to see your blog..its like a FREE magazine hehe..love it hun!!
I have got to admit that I was unconvinced until I saw the columns in the last pic with the moss balls on top - they are awesome! I think adding something to the top makes it look less unfinished and random?
Love how the images displayed columns in a unique way. We have some old cement ones in our garden. Hum, you gave me an idea...I might have a place for them inside!
Love this post! VERY INSPIRATIONAL!!!
These rooms are stunning. I wish I could bring each of them into my home. Thanks for sharing! :)

these are all beautiful examples. i especially love that space with the blue sofa!
We've had to work around issues in several houses that ended up needing a column of some sort and it always ends up adding just the right detail! Loved this post!

I absolutely agree that each one added something of interest and in the case of that bedroom....loads of pizazzz!

When placed perfectly, columns can add a little drama or frame parts of a room - love John Showers Design and Slettvol! I've considered placing a column in my living room - lots of ideas here!
We adore everything here! All the decor is so inspiring! We really need to spruce up the apt! A new couch (up to par with the blue one above) is needed!
PS. We've a DORIS giveaway on our blog! Check it out, if you'd like :)

Wow! I never would have considered using free-standing columns in my decor, but I love them in the photos you've selected.
I like the staggered look of those in the second to last image and how the different heights create some asymmetry.
Pics are more inspiring me to decorate and make up my home more beautiful :)
Great blog.
These rooms are so pretty. These photos are very inspiring. Love them all.
I'm your follower now.

Free standing columns are one of those wonderful arrows in you quiver to use when you want to frame a view or an area of a room or give a room lift.
Sally and I had a similar problem as Hampton Hostess is dealing with a number of years ago in a 20 x 40 room overlooking a patio. There was a boxed in structural beam crossing the room at 2/3 of the length of the room. We used square pilasters on the walls and floated two round Corinthian style columns about 9" off the walls to visually support the boxed in beam and to define two different areas of the room. They became the spring point for a gorgeous neoclassical design for the room.
Cheers,
John
I love those moss balls too! Such a statement maker.
LOVE this decorative touch - what a stunning idea! :)
Hi! Thank you so much for stopping by yesterday. I'm thrilled to have found you, too! I live near Kansas City, and we went to a huge flea market there this past weekend and I couldn't believe how many columns that were for sale there, dirt cheap! Love em.
I never thought about freestanding columns, but this shows them in a beautiful way.
You know, I never gave much though to free-standing columns - I had the same idea vision of the Parthenon in my mind! But after seeing all these rooms with columns, I realize that they're actually very sculptural and essentially pieces of art. I have whole new appreciation for columns now - thanks! :-)
You've sold me!!! These photos show how columns can really add architectural character to a room - and give things a "lift"!!
Happy Thursday, ladies!
xoxo Elizabeth
I have to say this — I have NEVER noticed a freestanding column until this post. They add polish and flair! Who knew?
We had a pair of antique standing in the space between our living room and dining room and they just made the room look more cozy!
xxoo
Great post - I love looking at the different ways people have displayed them...
I love the first and second rooms in this post - they are exactly the look and style I love.
I finished doing that room up too if you fancy having a nose.
Lovely post - thanks for sharing.

So many wonderful ways to incorporate columns into your decor!
Please stop by my blog--you were one of my winner's in my latest giveaway :)
I really like the picture where they are flanking the fireplace. I think the columns are really attractive, but don't know if I would incorporate them in my decor.
They definitely add height to the room. The photos show exactly how versatile they are. Way to go Mom.
Beautiful, i love it!

It's a glamorous addition to any room! Definitely giving it more depth. Have a beautiful end of the week, Kellie xx
Fabulous examples - not always easy to get it right!!
These are wonderful examples. Sometimes a column is just the right architectural element to add for height and interest.
