Marble Countertops

1st Options

When it comes to kitchens, styles change. There are some we're glad to see go -- that means you, harvest gold and avocado green -- and others we kind of wish would come back -- designer white appliances perhaps? But when it comes to standing the test of time, linoleum, tile and even granite and quartz may come and go, but we think marble is one surface that stands the test of time.

Jackye Lanham Design
Everyone warned me. I'll admit it. I was told by everyone from the manufacturer to the installer that marble is not the most durable surface for a kitchen counter. But, when you get right down to it, some things in life are as much about aesthetics as they are about function.

So I did it anyway. And, it's true. It gets etched. But what's the point of having a beautiful kitchen if you can't cook in it without being stressed? Plus, twice a year they come buff and re-seal it so it's as good as new.

We love marble sinks. So gorgeous.

These utilitarian light fixtures are amazing.
Design Track Mind
My husband and I should have added this feature to our kitchen. Someone always ends up washing a ton of produce in the bar sink!

These Mackenzie Childs canisters are so cute. Caroline on the Real Housewives of New Jersey has them in her house.

There's nothing better than a kitchen with lighting galore. What a beautiful way to achieve it.

Those handles and hinges are so amazing. It really is the little things...

What a gorgeous spread -- and chandelier. Who says the kitchen can't sparkle?

Yellow is our all-time favorite kitchen accent color. It's just so happy, isn't it?
We hope you all have a yellow kind of day.
Oh -- and for those of you who tried to check out our guest post yesterday, we're sorry! A little miscommunication. We'll let you know when it's up!

Love marble counter tops! We did them in the master bath and they make me happy every day! The previous owners put black honed granite in the kitchen - it's fine, but some day I would like to start fresh and put in some dreamy Calcutta Gold instead!
Hope you have a yellow day, too!

Drool-worthy post. The second image is my favorite. And then, of course, Martha.

We agree...white marble is timeless and just looks better with age. We were given the same warnings but didn't care either. Beautiful and worth the etching.

I love the image with the chandelier too! Wow. and the yellow pops of color are beautiful.

We also have the marble top and sinks in our kitchen and I am so glad we had gone for it!! I prefer the aesthetic look of our kitchen! You have to live with the spots on the marble and they are a charming presentation of the good life in the kitchen, isn't it?!

couldn't agree more about the agelessness of marble! I mean, those French just don't make too many design mistakes;) I can't count the number of stories I have heard of people who wanted marble and were talked out of it (probably most by salespeople who didn't actually own it) and were sad and regretful. I, too, did all the homework and was up for the etching (never had anything "stain" it) and have learned to love and embrace the patina! I will say those first couple of etches were horrifying, but you get over it!! Happy you didn't settle!

We are putting in marble countertops as we speak. Our house was built in the 20's so it seems very appropriate for that era. You say you have them buffed once a year? What does that entail, it sounds interesting....

Beautiful post!!!!!! I never met a slab of marble I didnt drool over (make that white marble) because in actuality I don't love all colors but white marble is such a rich and elegant material...whats prettier than a huge chunk of sumptious white marble on a kitchen counterop? Nothing! Love it, am going to bookmark this wonderful post so that I can come back for more inspiration......never get enough!
Well done:)

I'm drooling over these beautiful kitchens, our countertops are past needing to be updated, I'm not sure what I'll choose..it's a ways off so have lots of time to decide..hugs ~lynne~

I had the same conundrum when I was re-modeling my kitchen. I actually ended up going with the caesarstone "organic white" and have never been happier. It has a simlar look to the marble but you could drop a bomb on it.
Here is the link to my kitchen. Take a gander!

Absolutely gorgeous images. While every picture is beautiful, my heart skipped a bit when
I saw that marble sink! And that double sink with the double faucet is a marvelous idea! There will be no more fights and waiting over the sink to wash hands after a meal.

This is one of the best collections of beautiful kitchen images I've ever seen!!! I, too, went with marble....and I don't regret it at all. It's just got such a beautiful patina and I think works to add timliness to a home.

stunning kitchens...and marble is so elegant and refined....sadly, it is not as durable as other surfaces as you noted...but even that can be remedied..

Hi, your blog is beautiful.
Fabulous kitchens, love it.
Marble is the most beautiful surface for a kitchen counter, but you're right, here in Brasil we use granite and Corian because of its durability.
Big hugs from Brasil

I would love to have Carrara marble tops but I am too afraid of stains and worrying about it. Although I have it on my guest bath and entry floor11 Who knows when it comes time to replace my tile top, I just might go for it!!! My cupboards are the green like in the one kitchen you posted so I know what it will look like. So many pretty kitchens in this post!! Kathysue

i am in love with this material as well although sadly i was talked out of it when our home was constructed 4 years ago. can't wait to get lots of it installed in a new bath we're completing downstairs and then i fully intend to use it in my next kitchen. my husband and i are always looking ahead to our next project, and i think it's good to have things on a wish list for the future. keeps us from being completely spoiled!

gorgeous lovely post, ladies.

So pretty! I'm a huge fan of marble and fell in love with it when I visited France for the first time and saw the most amazing patina on the old marble tables and bar tops. We put honed carrera on our island and were warned by EVERYONE as well, but I'm so glad I didn't back down - it was the BEST thing about the entire kitchen! :)

I could kick myself for getting granite instead of these! I would have them buffed twice a year with no complaints -- they are SO gorgeous!

So grateful for this post and all of the commenters. I was having an internal debate over marble vs honed granite that "looks" like marble. Decision made, marble wins :)

I wish I could say I had the bar sink problem (and I'm not talking about the bar sink!)

These are lovely traditional kitchens, and it's true that marble will never date! Another truly beautiful stone for a kitchen is Travertine. My mum had it installed and it is beautiful (even prettier than marble) although I wouldn't necessarily recommend it unless you can deal with high maitenance kitchens - it etches far worse than marble and you have to look after it well (don't leave lemon juice on the counter!). I don't think you can beat the beauty of natural stone!

I quite agree with you — marble is absolutely timeless... we see it in old, old castles and new homes – beautiful no matter what. I like the images you have shown here, too — so fun with yellow as an accept, for certain. Elegant, yet cheerful :)

Hope you have a lovely day. I have not stopped by as often as I would have liked, but am so happy to be catching up now...

Sarah

Lovely photos! Our kitchen currently has a torn up floor and countertops stacked with all manner of items that do not belong in a kitchen. SO all of these pictures were definitely inspiring!

Thanks for stopping by my blog (His & Hers)--we thought the black lagoon was pretty scary, too! :)

My last kitchen had honed Carrera counters (mixed with some in mahogany). I just love them - classic, elegant, timeless and neutral!!

Oh wow what an amazing post!! I LOVE marble, and I'd sacrifice function for aesthetics any time if it meant marble counters. Also love the crystal wine bucket in the 2nd to last pic. And yes, yellow is definitely a happy color!
