Going Gray

Anne Decker Architect
While we are always big fans of white, sometimes it seems like, when it comes to kitchen cabinets, so many of us get caught up in the idea that a shade of white is our only option.

Martha Stewart's kitchen
Everyone always says that changing the paint is the fastest, easiest, least expensive way to change the look of a room.
Betty Wasserman Interiors
But let's face it: When it comes to painting cabinets, getting a real pro who will do a beautiful job is going to cost a pretty penny.
Tracery Interiors
So it's still important to make sure, while branching out, that the color you choose will stand the test of time.

Graciela Rutkowski Design
For a departure from the ordinary without the remorse that can come from choosing a color that's too intense, we are huge fans of the gray kitchen cabinet.

elements of style
It's so warm, so chic and looks fabulous with pretty much any color and style of knob.

Life of Polarn Per
Plus, you aren't caught a year later, way too soon to hire a professional again, wishing that the red you chose for your cabinets wasn't so... red.
Kvanum Swedish Kitchens
Gray seems to lend itself to pretty much any floor type, as well.

Mick De Giulio
It's a beautiful contrast to a lighter floor,

Sally Wheat's kitchen
And brings out the richness of a darker hardwood.

Plus, what could be a better match for your stainless steel?

What is your favorite kitchen cabinet color? We hope you are all having a wonderful week. Thanks for stopping by today!

all of these kitchens are beautiful. I could move right into the first kitchen. Love it!

I want to paint my kitchen island grey (the rest is white). I wonder what paint colors they are using. Finding a good grey has always been so hard for me.

Gorgeous kitchens and I agree on the gray, love it and it goes with everything. To me everyone has a white kitchen and it's been done to death, just my opinion. Since I have black soapstone counters and tones of gray soapstone flooring our kitchen needed warmth so we went with a custom cinnamon wood.Good post to break people out of the white.

All of these kitchens are gorgeous. I would love to redo ours like a couple of these pictures... thanks for sharing so full of inspiration.

Over to yours from Michele and I absolutely agree that a little deviation from white can be wonderful too!

I personally like grey and I think shades of grey are a great idea to experiment with as they do stand the test of time and looks chic. Add yellow, lime and turquoise for summer, red and whites for Christmas or oranges and blacks for autumn. Grey never looks out of place in any setting!

I am seeing grey a lot and I love it! It looks very sharp in these kitchens! The lights used in these kitchens are fantastic and the windows are incredible! I need gorgeous windows like that in my place one day! Thanks for your comment! I love zebra prints in any way too! :)

I'm a huge fan of white kitchens but these grey ones are gorgeous - I have always loved Martha's kitchen colour and it goes with everything (especially nice with marble countertops) :)

Gorgeous! I love my white kitchen, but these photos make it tempting to go gray!

My ivory kitchen is 8 years old now and the cabinet finish is starting to show signs of wear. You must be reading my mind because I have been considering a luscious farrow and ball gray !

Of course, I have yet to talk my family into this project. Upsetting the kitchen is always a hassle--- Gray is the new white!

Great pics! I'm definitely considering gray cabinetry in the new kitchen plan. That with marble would be perfection!

Great suggestions! It's always either white or dark brown but rarely gray! I think we are in the same track today (did a gray post).

I'm glad you think grey is timeless. I recently read a post that said otherwise, which was a bummer because I just painted my lower cabinets (uppers are cream) in our rental kitchen. It made a huge improvement, but I do wish we had darker wood floors, like the ones you featured here. It makes for a nice, warm contrast.

Lovely kitchens. I'm a fan of the gray too. You can't go wrong with gray.

I love all of this. But, my favorite is the deeper gray, looks smashing with all of the brights, artwork, and never gets boring. & btw, I'm a total neat freak, so I get all of this hard work. xx's

Long ago my husband and I tried to paint our kitchen cabinets...let me just say it didn't go well! On top of that the color was too bold and in the end we pulled it all out. So, I agree...choosing carefully and hiring a professional is the way to go. :) I love gray for a kitchen - I'm thinking a deep charcoal for my next kitchen when we are more settled and I can't wait!

Now after seeing all these elegant kitchens I would say that I would go for a grey cabinet kitchen. It really is one of my favourite colours and can be so beautifully combined with many others . :)

Hi there!
Oh, how fun to see the Swedish lamp 'Bumling' from Ateljé Lyktan in image nr 6.
And I have to agree, grey kitchen looks great and will last in time. Martha´s kitchen has always amazed me. Open storage looks so fabolous, but does it work IRL?
Also, felt curious and inspired by Meghan Carte´s book. Must see if I can track it down here in Sweden- feels like a must have for someone like me, struggling with every decorating decision in my own home:).
Happy weekend!

I love white kitchens- I've had them in several houses for 20 years now, and think of them as classic. It makes me laugh to hear people say they are a trend!
But, these kitchens are all gorgeous, and I think they are going to stand the test of time too.

Whenever you paint something, you wonder -- have I got it right? I'm still looking at my kitchen through that lens, but pretty sure I made the right decision. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today and leaving a comment on the new Whale Gray cabinets. I love the color -- it really seems to bring the entire kitchen together -- and I love looking at all of these fabulous kitchens (perfect timing for me!) Stay tuned -- I hope to get more pics up to show the end result (I also did every surface in the adjoining mudroom the same color!).

Thanks again, and I love your blog!

I love the warmth of the darker gray lower cabinets in the last image. Probably would have done something a bit different with the uppers though. Maybe in the detailing vs. the color.

Oh dearest, GRAY is my color of choice for my home. We added two rooms to our home last January and there are elements of distressed gray and it feels so peaceful and now that the holidays are coming, I am looking so forward to decorating. I've always had a white kitchen, but lately I have been loving gray or maybe black cabinets. I think gray would probably show less wear and water marks that are bound to happen. These are all beautiful.

Hi!! I'm dreaming of Paris, too. Can't help it! I love all of these colors actually, but, of course, white seems like a safe color to choose. Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Did you write this post just for me? Thank you ladies!(:

A kitchen makeover is high on our home priority list (I am hoping this Spring). And I am so going gray!!! Light gray with lots of white. I am saving the entire post. Everyhing I love you managed to put into this post. Very nice!

Love to you both,

P.S Sorry I have not been visiting all week - just been too busy! But today I am catching up with my favorite blogs.

I like the gray but I have opted to go for a creamy white with a light gray stried wash for the perimeter cabinets, glass doors with gray painted interiors, and dark cherry with a matte finish for the island. Counters and backsplash will be calacatta oro. I am happy with my decisions and I hope to be happy with them for many years to come.

Thank you for the inspirational images.
Best...Victoria
